What is a Run-Flat Tire?

Run-Flat tires are specially designed tires that allow you to keep driving safely for a certain distance even after a puncture or loss of pressure. In standard tires, when air pressure is completely lost, the tire collapses immediately and vehicle control becomes difficult. However, Run-Flat tires can maintain their shape thanks to reinforced rubber layers in the sidewalls, allowing you to keep driving the vehicle under control.

How Do They Work?

Run-Flat tires work based on two main technologies:

  1. Reinforced Sidewall Technology (Self-Supporting):
In this system, the tire’s sidewalls are extra strong and rigid. Even if there is a loss of pressure, the tire does not fully collapse and can keep running for a certain distance.

  2. Support Ring System:
This system is often preferred in luxury and performance vehicles. A special support ring placed around the rim helps carry the weight of the vehicle if the tire bursts.

Advantages of Run-Flat Tires

Safety: Greatly reduces the risk of losing control due to sudden tire failure.
Time and comfort: Allows you to drive to a repair shop without having to change the tire on the road.
Trunk space: Saves extra space in the trunk by eliminating the need to carry a spare tire.
Lower risk: Reduces the risk of being stranded, especially at night or in dangerous areas.

What is the Role of Run-Flat Tires in Armored Vehicles?

Armored vehicles transport government officials, VIP passengers, cash transfer teams, or security forces on critical missions. The role of tires in the safety of these vehicles is much greater than it might seem. At this point, Run-Flat tires become vitally important for armored vehicles.

Escape Capability During an Attack

In an ambush or attack, the most critical need is to quickly get away from the area. Thanks to Run-Flat tires:

  • Even if the tire is punctured, it is possible to escape at speeds of up to 80 km/h.

  • You can reach a safe location within a distance of 50–100 km.
This offers a life-saving advantage for the driver and passengers.

Adapted to the Weight of Armored Vehicles

Armored vehicles are much heavier than standard vehicles. Thanks to their reinforced construction, Run-Flat tires can:

  • Carry the weight even with heavy ballistic armor.

  • Maintain vehicle stability even when punctured, reducing the risk of rollover.

Run-Flat tires not only help armored vehicles resist attacks but also allow them to keep moving without losing mobility during an assault. This directly supports the main purpose of an armored vehicle: ensuring the safety of passengers and enabling a secure escape.
