Although ballistic glass may look like ordinary glass from the outside, it contains an engineering marvel of layered systems within. The level of security is directly related to how many layers the glass has and what materials are used in its production.

 

How Many Layers Are There?

A standard ballistic glass typically consists of 7 to 13 layers. The number of layers is determined by the level of ballistic threat the glass is expected to resist. For example, 7–8 layers may be sufficient for BR2 level threats, while higher threat levels like BR6 or BR7 require systems with 12 or more layers.

 

What Are the Layers Made Of?
 

  1. Tempered Glass: The outermost layer that takes the first impact of the bullet.
  2. PVB (Polyvinyl Butyral): A flexible adhesive layer that bonds glass sheets together.
  3. Polycarbonate: A plastic material with high impact absorption capacity that helps dissipate the bullet’s energy.
  4. Inner Glass Layer: Prevents fragmentation and protects those inside.
  5. UV Filter & Scratch-Resistant Coating: Optional layers that extend the glass’s lifespan and maintain its appearance.

     

Why Is Each Layer Important?

Each layer enhances the glass’s ability to stop bullets. The first glass layer disperses energy, the intermediate layers absorb shock, and the polycarbonate layer reduces the impact force to stop the bullet. These structures work together as a unit to provide both physical protection and internal safety.
